The Emory Roybal Center for Dementia Caregiving Mastery promotes translation and integration of basic behavioral and social research findings through interventions to improve the lives of older adults and their families and to support the capacity of institutions to address societal aging. The goal of the Emory Roybal Center for Dementia Caregiving Mastery is to provide support to investigators across the nation to conduct NIH Stage I-III behavioral intervention research that will enhance the context specific role-mastery of informal caregivers of persons living with Alzheimer’s disease and similar illnesses. The Emory Roybal Center for Dementia Caregiving Mastery is currently accepting applications to fund behavioral interventions designed to enhance competence and confidence (mastery/self-efficacy) of caregivers to enact solution or problem-focused coping behaviors in context-specific caregiving situations. Describe the area of mastery which your intervention seeks to develop or enhance. The research must involve a clinical trial (control conditions not necessary) and be feasible within a one-year period. Proposals must apply the NIH Stage Model as a theoretical framework when designing their intervention. Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the current literature on the NIH Stage Model to be able to successfully apply it to proposal development.

Emory Roybal Center for Dementia Caregiving Mastery

  • Center Focus: Behavioral interventions designed to enhance competence and confidence (mastery/self-efficacy) of caregivers to enact solution or problem-focused coping behaviors in context-specific caregiving situations. The center is premised on the notion that caregiving is context-specific and that there is a great heterogeneity of contexts (e.g., illness type, illness stage, relational status (i.e., child, spouse, or other caregiver), care location (e.g., home or institutional setting), co-morbidities, cultural/family expectations, etc.). LOIs are expected to identify the context of interest and the kinds of stresses associated with it as well as the proposed intervention and its mechanism of action.
